We take you to the range with us for our first time shooting the Swiss Arms SG 551sp, otherwise known in Canada as the Classic Green Carbine. I heard that these rifles were the "Cadillac" of the black and red rifles world, and this certainly is giving a wonderful first impression. We fire this rifle with iron sights at 100 and 200 yards on AR500 steel targets with acceptable results.
As said in our unveiling, the rifle has been re-barreled to be non-restricted by Canadian law. This allows the rifle to be used outside of designated shooting ranges where it is legal to discharge a firearm. First impression of the re-barrel is that the integrated flash suppressor has a tuning fork effect that you can audibly hear with each shot, but other than that the barrel is performing great. The reason for the integrated flash suppressor is to meet Canadian barrel length laws for a non-restricted rifle while maintaining the shortest overall length possible, but if I were to get a custom barrel for this rifle again I would go full length barrel without the integrated flash suppressor, and have it threaded for aftermarket flash suppressors. This would eliminate the tuning fork effect and only add a slight amount of length, and might get a few ounces of weight off of the rifle as all of that steel would no longer be there.
Specs of the rifle are;
- Long Stroke Gas Piston System.
- 1 in 8 twist stainless steel barrel.
- 5.56 NATO Chambering.
- Rotating drum diopter sights.
- Foldable stock.
- Detachable box magazine.
